War With The Newts
Opened October 27th, 2007 at The Red Eye Theater, Minneapolis
WWTN opened in October, 2007. It was an ensemble-created piece based on the 1936 sci-fi political satire novel by Karel Capek. In WWTN, Capek revisits the themes of his most famous work, R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), pitting mankind against our own hubris. In this novel, however, he puts the blame more squarely on our talent for ignoring better judgement when greed is involved. Our play, developed by an exceedingly talented ensemble (listed below) and led by Sandbox founders Ryan Hill, Lisa Moreira and Heather Stone, dives into the alienation, comedy and foreboding in Capek's story. As always, we pay special attention to design and the visual dramaturgy of the piece, led by Costume Director Andrew Lawrence Schiff. Artistic Director Ryan Hill designed the set and masks. Lighting was designed by Heidi Eckwall. A first for Sandbox, WWTN featured all original music. We collaborated with local ambient electronic composer Tim Donahue on a wonderfully intense, image-rich soundscape that made this alternate world come to life. WWTN was voted Lavender Magazine's #8 Top Show of 2007 and Ryan Hill's set design was noted as one of the top 10 designs of the year by City Pages.
